CHAPTER FIVE-STROKE OF MIDNIGHT
From what seemed like a great distance, Cinderessa stirred in Blaize’s arms as she heard the ominous peals of the great clock in the ballroom announcing the hour.
She sat up in a panic. Blaize was lightly snoring beside her and she had lost all track of time, but the feeling of absolute dread in her heart told her the hour.
It was Midnight.
She still had on her ball gown and slippers, but her mask that she’d thrown aside had disappeared. She opened the door and fled quietly down the hall, wishing she had something to cover her face.
The dazzling lights of the ballroom nearly blinded her, but keeping one hand held against the side of her face, she made her way toward the open palace doors.
The crowd atmosphere was gay as she looked down and spied a translucent scarf that one of the partygoers had dropped on the marble floor. Hurriedly she put it over her, so that only the bottom half of her face was visible.
She had nearly made it into the welcoming cool of the night air when she heard the Prince’s voice behind her.
“WAIT! Wait Mademoiselle! I need to speak with you! The hour of unveiling has arrived!” he cried, trying to make his way through the crowd to catch up with her.
Even though it was ridiculously crowded, she felt him get close enough to grab ahold of her hand, but quickly managed to twist it away from his grasp.
As he felt her pull away he looked down, and found that her pinky ring had slipped off and he was holding it in the palm of his hand.
“I’m so sorry! I must leave now!” the Prince heard her shout over her shoulder.
Just then the palace trumpets sounded to signal another arrival, and much to his frustration, the Prince was swept away by his entourage.
